Ambassadors across the country converged on Hobbs,
New Mexico May 9-12, 2007 for the 21st annual
conference of NACA.
Twenty different groups from 6 states were represented
at the conference. The first luncheon was held at the
Lea County Heritage Museum, and the group was
visited by New Mexico Senator Gay Kernan. Attendees
wrapped up the first evening with their annual pin exchange and uniform judging, held at Runnel's Ranch north of Hobbs.
The three-day conference featured inspirational and educational speakers including Jean Block, a national speaker, trainer, and consultant; Bob Reid, a business consultant/strategist; Steve McCleer, a Master of Education; and Steve Eckman, Executive VP of Ohio Valley University.
One of the highlights of the annual conference is always the auction -- there is both a Silent Auction and a Live Auction held during the meeting. In fact, board member Becky Stallings did her best to have Ray Battaglini's corvette included as a raffle item, but Ray just didn't see it that way at all!
Everyone enjoyed the "Old Glory" presentation from the Masonic Lodge! These fine men "built" the flag for our group as they detailed everything the nation's flag stands for and what it has been through during the life of our nation.
Those attending the conference enjoyed workshops and round table discussions. The topics included issues faced by ambassador groups across the country, such as Fund Raising - The How-Tos, Ribbon Cuttings & Stuff, Ambassador Projects & Activities, and Pins, Patches, and Uniforms among other topics.
Besides all the work that was accomplished, the group had a
lot of fun! Following lunch on the
11th, the group was treated to a performance by the Spanish Folk Dancers of Hobbs, and Friday evening they were entertained by the Cold Water Country Band.
During the General Session on the final day of the conference, incoming president Jeni Coke from Lake Havasu City, Arizona encouraged the group to "be the bridge," and those present grouped into teams to build bridges with packets of legos!
Other officers elected to serve for 2007 include Gussie Black, President-Elect from Hobbs, New Mexico; Emily Waite, Secretary/Treasurer from Wichita Falls, Texas; and Frank Sherman, Parliamentarian from Clovis, New Mexico.
The conference ended Saturday evening, May 12 at the Hobbs Country Club, with the live auction and awards. Special Lifetime Recognition Awards went to Jeni Coke, Frank Sherman, and Randy Smith.
Wichita Falls, Texas was chosen last year for the location of next year's conference, and Shawnee, Oklahoma won the bid to hold the 2009 conference!
